During a hunt in 1263 a stag charged at King Alexander III of Scotland and the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie saved the kings life by spearing the stag in its forehead. As a sign of gratitude the King awarded him the lands of Eilean Donan and the right to bear a 12-pointed Royal Stag as their crest. When the Chief’s ancestors bought the Dalmore distillery in 1867 they used the iconic 12-pointed Royal Stag emblem which has adorned every bottle of The Dalmore since.
