NV Porta Del Vento Voria Bianco - Sicily, Italy (750ml) - $26
Porta del Vento was launched when Marco Sferlazzo, owner and winemaker, was offended to see a wine conglomerate ripping up precious plots of old vine Perricone and Catarratto, so he purchased the vineyards, converted them to organic and biodynamic farming, and the rest is history. This 100% Catarratto quasi-PetNat starts with 50 year old vines rooted in sandy soils about 600m above sea level. The grapes are hand harvested and then lightly pressed into cement tanks where the first fermentation takes place spontaneously on fine lees for 3 months. After the initial fermentation, the wine is bottled with some of the must for its second fermentation, like in Champagne, but it's not disgorged or filtered adn bottles without any added sulfur, which is more typical of a PetNat. It's hazy, straw yellow color with gentle bubbles precedes aromas of citrus and orchard fruit, orange blossom, and sea air. The palate is light-bodied with flavors of lemon, pineapple, melon, and ripe pear with bright acid, salivating salinity and clean but very apparent minerality. Pairs delectably with Sarde a Beccafico (stuffed sardines) or orange and fennel salad.

2023 Maçanita Branco - Douro, Portugal (750ml) - $27
Joana and António Maçanita are a dynamic and passionate brother-sister winemaking team, each with over 20 years of experience working with a combined 18 different wineries, before they launched their own label focusing on indigenous, often obscure varietals. This white is a blend of 70% Viosinho, 20% Arinto, and 10% Gouveio grown on the impossibly steep slopes of the Baixo Corgo and Cima Corgo subregions of the Douro River Valley. Harvested by hand, whole bunches are gently pressed then undergo cold, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel to preserve its vibrant character. Clean and crisp, the nose is layered and inviting, with notes of fresh flowers, orchard fruits, and wet slate. On the palate, a mouthwatering juxtaposition of puckery green apple with gentle golden pear, finishes with a peppery, mineral edge. Pair this medium-bodied gem with a smoky trout terrine and freshly baked crusty bread, or try it alongside peixinhos da horta, flour battered and fried green beans.

2022 Franz Weninger Solidarität Red - Burgenland, Austria (750ml) - $21
Solidarität is a side project from Franz Weninger, meant for sharing with friends and loved ones any day of the week, in good times and bad. Whatever is going on around us, we can always find a moment of respite and come together over food and drink as kind-hearted humans have done for millennia. Located in sunny Burgenland, just a few minutes from Hungarian border, surrounded by windmills, and cherry trees, Franz makes this blend of 60% Blaufränkisch, 20% Cab Franc, and 20% Syrah, entirely from estate-grown fruit that's certified organic and biodynamic. Hand harvested, spontaneously fermented, unfined/unfiltered, and with minimal SO2, this superbe chiller shows lots of juicy, crunchy red berry fruit, crisp acidity and low tannin with a hint of white pepper and herbaceousness. Great for sipping on its own but pairs well with lighter fare, milder cheeses and crudité.

2021 Rovellotti Ronco al Maso Colline Novaresi Vespolina - Piedmont, Italy (750ml) - $27.5
Produced from a minuscule 0.4 hectare vineyard, Rovellotti’s Vespolina, is an excellent portrait of this lesser known varietal that’s indigenous to Piedmont. Sustainably farmed and vinified, it’s fermented in stainless steel after an eight day maceration and aged for three months in botti. It’s light-to medium-bodied yet robust, with firm, dry tannins and fresh acidity that frame a full spectrum of flavors from brambly berries, cherry and pomegranate to rose petal and herbs with a hint of tobacco. Pair with roasted pork chops and creamed spinach or a hearty vegetarian dish like lentils with chargrilled eggplant and thyme.
