2021 St. Reginald Parish The Marigny Auxerrois Blanc Super Deluxe Cuvee - Willamette Valley, OR (750ml) - $25
Former drummer, preacher’s son: Andrew Reginald Young a.k.a “St. Reginald Parish” is the intriguing personality behind tiny-but-mighty, The Marigny. Farmed organically on a remote plot in the McMinnville AVA, Young’s Auxerrois is pressed whole cluster into old neutral barrels where it ferments spontaneously on its gross lees and is never stirred nor racked until bottling. The nose carries the lightness of fresh cut grass and citrus blossom. Medium-bodied and refreshing on the palate, the buttery mouthfeel plays with the acidic cut of a Meyer lemon note, herbs, and subtle minerality. Pair with a sablefish piccata or veggie tempura with ponzu.
2022 Keltis Zan White - Bizeljsko, Slovenia (750ml)- $28
An exotic, vibrant blend of Yellow Plavec, Kraljevina, Muscat Ottonel, Traminer, Laški Riesling, and Pinot Blanc, Zan White hails from Bizeljsko, in eastern Slovenia, where the Kelhar family has been making wine for over two centuries. Today, Miha Kelhar farms the family’s 5 hectares of vines organically and biodynamically. Harvested by hand, the grapes see a three day maceration before aging for six months in stainless steel and bottled with zero added sulfur. The result is a captivating wine, that straddles the orange and white categories. It’s aromatic and juicy, with notes of orchard fruit on the nose and bone dry citrus on the palate with a dash of citrus peel bitters and a very subtle tannic texture. Consider pairing with grilled chicken breasts or a plate of štruklji, Slovenian farmer's cheese dumplings.
2023 Fora Bidon Bidon - Veneto, Italy (750ml) - $28
Old friends Giovanni and Simone launched Fora in the Colli Berici hills just south of Vicenza, making ‘out there’ wines. In the local dialect, Fora translates to ‘out’ as in ‘you’re out of your mind.’ Bidon Bidon is their semi-sparkling, frizzante rosato comprised of about 85% Tai Rosso, a variation of Grenache, and 15% Garganega, the varietal in Soave, both native to the region and the only two grapes that Fora plants. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeast followed by elevage in stainless steel tank for eight months. The result is a light, crisp, almost tart, fizzy rosé with white pepper, ruby red grapefruit, lychee and wild berry flavors that finishes with just a hint of tannin and minerality. Super interesting yet unmistakably pleasurable, we recommended this alongside a square Bufala pizza from Impasto with San Marzano tomatoes or a Mediterranean Chickpea Salad.
2023 Clos Fornelli 'La Robe d'Ange' Sciaccarellu - Corsica, France (750ml) - $24
Situated along the Eastern coast of Corsica, Clos Fornelli organically dry farms this 100% Sciaccarellu, a unique, indigenous varietal, that thrives in hot, dry climates and requires no irrigation. Proximity to the sea prevents dehydration and stress and the vines are meticulously pruned to prevent crowding on the vine, encourage air flow, and ensure that only the most pristine, ripe grapes make it into the cuvée. After a 3 week fermentation, the juice is aged in concrete vats for 7 to 10 months with regular stirring. The result is a light to medium bodied, ruby colored red with fragrances of spruce, rose, and wild berries. Ripe black cherry and raspberry flavors, racy acidity and gentle tannins emerge on the palate, followed by black pepper and briny olive notes on the earthy, mineral-driven finish. Compelling yet supple and easy sipping, La Robe d’Ange (angel’s dress) pairs well with grilled Corsican trout or Brocciu, a fresh, local soft whey cheese from goat’s or sheep’s milk.
