2023 Weninger Franz Plays With Szurke & Feher MMXVIII - Burgenland, Austria (750ml) - $26
Franz Weninger farms certified biodynamic vineyards on both sides of the Burgenland border, in Austria and Hungary. Building on his father's pioneering organic work in Hungary during the 1980s, Franz sees organic farming as a starting point with biodynamics as the actual best practice. Since returning to the family winery in 1999, he has deepened their commitment to soil health and tradition, replanting vineyards with native varieties while preserving older plantings of international grapes. This skin-contact co-ferment of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir reflects that philosophy. With a hue between orange and pale pink, the wine opens up with aromas of plum, violet, and grapefruit and lead to slightly effervescent flavors of lychee, pomegranate, and pink grapefruit with bright acidity, easy tannins, and a savory finish. Pairs beautifully with chicken tajine, zucchini noodle casserole, or fruit salad trifle.
2023 Domaine Kox Moselle Luxembourgeoise Cabernet Blanc - Wellenstein, Luxembourg (750ml) - $28
Crafted from the innovative Cabernet Blanc variety, this wine reflects both tradition and transformation. Born from a cross that includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Silvaner, Riesling, and Chancellor, this hybrid thrives without herbicides or pesticides. The grapes are hand-picked from three sustainably farmed vineyards, treated only with natural applications administered by drone. Fermented and aged in stainless steel without added sulfur, the result is a true expression of this fungus-resistant variety. This crisp, refreshing white is filled with grassy, fresh apple aromas and flavors of peach, apricot, citrus fruit, apple, and earthy fresh cut grass with a pleasant lengthy finish. Pairs delightfully with a buttery baked salmon, corn husk grilled goat cheese, or Tabouleh.
2022 Casa de Saima Baga Bruto Espumante - Beiras, Portugal (750ml) - $24
At Casa de Saima, Graça Maria tends the vineyards using biodynamic and sustainable practices, working with native varieties to preserve the character and health of the land. Grapes from 15 year old vines planted in calcareous-clay soils undergo a slow, temperaturecontrolled fermentation in stainless steel for three weeks, followed by a second fermentation and 12 to 18 months of aging on the lees, bringing texture and depth. The hue is a pale lemon yellow with moussey, persistent bubbles. Fragrances of white flowers, mandarin, and tangerine lead into lively flavors of orange citrus fruit, bright acidity, and just the slightest touch of brioche leesiness with a pithy bitter finish. Pairs wonderfully with Unadon, black truffle salami, or grilled Bok Choy.
2023 Domaine du Possible Le Fruit Du Hasard - Languedoc-Roussillon, France (750ml) - $26
Winemaker Loïc Roure started working in wine with the intention of opening a wine bar. By 2003 the wine bar plans were scrapped and he bought his first parcel to start his own estate. He now owns 10 hectares throughout the Cotes de Roussillon. A blend of Carignan and Syrah, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and then ages in cement vats for 7 months in order to maintain crispness. The scent of wet earth wafts from the glass while the bright palette plays with cassis, raspberries, strawberries and a hint of balsamic. A fun pairing with Clapassade or Aligot.
