CloseGunther and Klaus Di Giovanna (Sicilian dad, German mom) are the fifth generation to run this estate in a remote, barely accessible part of central Sicily above the town of Sambuca which is well featured in Visconti’s adaptation of the classic novel Il Gattopardo, but has nothing to do with the ubiquitous anise infused liqueur which comes from Lazio. Vasca Diciotto is made from 100% estate grown Nero d’Avola, an indigenous Sicilian varietal, that thrives on the volcanic, calcareous, organically farmed, high altitude vineyards that surround the estate. Clean and ripe, this medium plus bodied red offers notes of wild berry and plum, balanced acidity and a firm, dry finish. It overdelivers for a boxed wine and pairs well with just about and pizza or red sauce pasta, burgers. Also great for cooking since you can use what you need without wasting any wine since a bag in a box lasts for weeks without oxidation.
