CloseJulie, a native of Oklahoma first met Toby, a Brit, while he was working on a harvest crew in Protection, Kansas. We have no idea what they were harvesting but presumably, it wasn't grapes. Fast forward a decade or so to 2012 when they launched their own 6.5 hectare winery in Anjou after working under the tutelage of some highly regarded Loire Valley vignerons. Everything is done manually and naturally with the recent introduction of sheep to graze the grasses and herbs between the rows of vines. 50/50 is an equal blend of Grolleau and Cabernet Franc grown on black schist bedrock with soils rich in iron and calcium. The grapes are hand de-stemmed, macerated in fiberglass for about 8-10 days, and then co-fermented. The result is a light bodied, dazzling scarlet red wine with aromas of red flowers, green pepper, berries, and garrigue followed by flavors of fresh cherry and raspberry with bright but balanced acidity and wet earth minerality. Wild, but not weird, enjoy lightly chilled with kielbasa, a spicy lamb sausage or chipotle black bean dip and toasted pita.
