Nicolas Einhart, a passionate winemaker rooted in generations of Alsatian winegrowers, has been a pioneer in sustainable viticulture since 1997 when he co-founded the TIFLO association to promote ecological refuge zones and do away with the use of chemical pesticides. Altenberg is 100% Gerwurztraminer grown on 25-year-old vines planted in southeast-facing vineyards with loess soil. After a 24 hour pre-fermentation maceration at cool temperatures to preserve delicate aromatics and avoid overextraction, the wine is aged for 10 months in stainless steel with no sulfur added and half of the production held for elevage. This all culminates in aromas of clay, orange blossom, and lychee, balanced by textured flavors of green apple, jasmine, and candied lemon zest with mouth watering acidity and wet stone minerality.
