CloseNadia Verrua’s family has been crafting natural wines from indigenous varietals for over a century among the steep hills of Monferatto in Piedmont’s Asti province. ’68’ is a 50/50 blend of Barbera and Ruché named after her uncle Sisto (6) and her dad Ottavio (8) both illustrated under a single, shared yellow fedora - go figure. Grown on clay and limestone soils, the grapes are harvested by hand, de-stemmed and gently pressed before a long, slow, cold maceration and native yeast fermentation in vat after which the wine is aged in a mix of cement, fiberglass, and Slavonian oak for about a year. With zero sulfur added, this is a wild, barnyardy red that packs a punch. Aromas of rose petal and plum lead to a wild, savory palate of tart cherry with a kombucha note. Light bodied and chillable, 68 pairs perfectly with dried bresaola, cacciatorini and pecorino or a ginger chicken stir-fry.
