CloseNamed after the region's abundant, wild red poppy flowers, Coquelicot Estate is a low-intervention winery crafting organic and sustainable wines that reflect the unique terroir of California's Central Coast. Made from 100% Merlot grown on Ballard gravelly fine sandy loam soil that drains exceptionally well preventing bloating which dilutes wine. The vineyard sits in a valley between the Santa Ynez Mountains to the south and the San Rafael Mountains to the northeast. This location creates a climate for growth that allows for coastal breezes to flow into the valley and a longer temperate growing season. Dramatic day-to-night temperature swings contribute to preserving the grapes' acidity while allowing phenolic ripeness. Grapes are de-stemmed, fermented with natural yeast and aged in 2-3 year old French oak barrels. The result is textbook, medium plus bodied Merlot that's both fresh and earthy. Raspberry, cassis, and fig notes accent the balanced acidity and tannins. Pairs equally well with pork tenderloin and blackberry sauce as it does with a chickpea and kale pasta salad.
