Close2Naturkinder is the brainchild of Melanie Drese and Michael Voelker, former science and philosophy scholars who traveled the world, learned about wine and life, before returning home to the family vineyard that dates back to 1843. Vater & Sohn (German for ‘father and son’), an homage to the time when Michael and his dad worked together, is a blend of 55% Müller-Thurgau, 25% Silvaner, 10% Riesling, and 10% Grauburgunder. Grapes are crushed by foot and then direct-pressed, apart from the Grauburgunder which has one week of maceration. The wine is fermented naturally, aged for 18 months in stainless and neutral oak, and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with zero sulfur added. The result is a light-bodied very subtle skin contact white with a pale salmon hue that opens with aromas of tropical citrus fruit and flavors of finger lime, lychee, and thyme with zippy acidity and mild, yet dry tannins. Pairs wonderfully with Porcini mushroom tart or salt baked sea bass.
