CloseFrom the family estate at the foothills of the Caiatini Mountains in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Michele Alois and his son, Massimo cultivate nine beautiful hectares of indigenous varieties with the same passion and perfectionism they apply to their world-famous silk fabrics and always using biological and sustainable techniques and farming. Trebulanum is made from 100% Casavecchia, an antique varietal that dates back to the House of Bourbon which ruled the Kingdom of Napoli (subsequently the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies) in the 18th and 19th centuries. From very low yielding old vines planted on volcanic ash, the grapes are fermented in large, 80 hectoliter Italian wood casks on the skins for 10 days with regular pumpovers for increased extraction, then aged for 24 months in smaller, 25hl casks. The result is a deep, compelling, savory red with exotic spice notes, earth and tobacco on the nose followed by dense, juicy black cherry, plum and leather flavors on the palate. The tannins are round but still firm and dry while the wine retains its racy acidity in a long, well-integrated finish. This world class red pairs perfectly with roast pork chops, or eggplant parmesan!
