Souhaut’s revered Gamay is a blend from 8 small estate-owned parcels (4 hectares in total) in the communes of Arlebosc, Empurany and Colombier le Vieux, in the Vallée du Doux. Soil preparation and farming is done 100% by hand without machinery or chemicals. Translucent purple in the glass with a garnet rim, the nose is an enticing array of strawberry, black cherry, and plum, with a smoky herbal peppery notes. Buoyant black fruit is followed by crisp red berry flavors, light but grippy tannins and pronounced minerality from the steep granite soils of the Northern Rhone where not many dare to plant Gamay. Light bodied and well chiseled, it pairs nicely alongside soft, aged gouda, roasted butternut squash or a whole roasted goose!
