CloseDomaine de Montvac, dating back 1860, is currently run by the mother/daughter team of Cécile and Amélie Dusserre, representing the 5th and 6th generations of the winery. Vacqueyras, just 20km from the legendary Chateauneuf-du-Pape, is in a slightly cooler climate at the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail and thus a touch lighter and more elegant. Theirs is a classic Southern Rhône blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre grown on sandstone and marl soils that were certified organic in 2014. Harvested and destemmed by hand, the grapes are fermented in whole bunches with native yeasts and gentle pumpovers. The wine ages in concrete vat for about 12 months before bottling. The result is a substantial, yet supple, medium-bodied red with ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors followed by leather and earthy notes on the firm dry tannic finish. Pairs perfectly with Lamb Tagine or portobello mushroom steak.
