CloseManuel Moraga Gutierrez, seventh generation winemaker at Cacique Maravilla in Chile's Bío-Bío Valley, tends his family’s volcanic vineyards that date back to 1776. Cuveé Naranja is their flagship orange wine made from hand-harvested, dry-farmed Moscatel de Alejandria, of which about 30% is affected by botrytis. The grapes macerate on their skins for two months in open-top concrete vats without punch-downs or pump-overs. Unfined and unfiltered, this lively skin contact white is fresh and tropical with notes of guava, citrus peel and a subtle but prevalent tannic grip. Pairs perfectly with grilled octopus with charred lemon and herbs or coconut-based Thai/Indian vegetable curries but can also stand up to a pork loin glazed with fruit compotes.
