Villa Tolnay is located at the foot of Csobánc, a dormant volcano on the northern shore of Lake Balaton in Western Hungary. The ancient volcanic soils and primeval sediments of the former Pannonian Sea give the wines an unmistakably volcanic expression, with distinctive minerality and vibrant acidity. Philipp Oser purchased the property in 2004, realizing its potential for crafting mineral-driven wine. This 100% Gruner Veltliner is spontaneously fermented partly in stainless steel tank and partly in large Stockinger oak barrels then aged for around 5 months. The result is a light-to-medium-bodied, floral and spicy white with citrus and green apple flavors as well as notes of white pepper, white flowers and a hint of salinity. Pair alongside char-grilled octopus or an endive, kale, and smoked salmon salad with avocado and pink grapefruit.
