CloseLeo Sommer’s family winery, situated between the eastern Alps of the Leitha Mountains and the shore of the ancient Lake Neusiedl, dates back to 1698. He took over in 2015 adopting a low-intervention, gentle organic approach that reflects his grandfather's methods of crafting honest, authentic wine. His Handwerk Riesling is grown on schist soils with some gneiss and quartz, along south-east facing slopes that catch the morning sun but are shaded by the Leithaberg hills in the afternoon. Hand-harvested, gently pressed, and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts, the wine ages in a mix of large oak, acacia, and concrete. The result is a medium-bodied, crisp Riesling with pear, and stone fruit flavors as well as subtle notes of flint and petrol. Pairs well with Weiner Schnitzel, roasted yams or Pla Neung Manao, spicy Thai steamed fish with lime.
