Located at the foot of the Ödenburger Gebirge– aka the Sopron Mountains– Katrin Lautner cultivates a mere 2.5 hectares of leased vineyards biodynamically as a side, passion project in addition to her full time job as cellar master at Franz Weninger. This 100% Blaufrankisch is grown on loamy, sandy soils in the Queraus vineyard. Harvested by hand, she crushes 2/3 of her harvest and ferments it alongside the other 1/3 in whole bunches. The juice is pressed into used oak barrels where it ages for around 11 months before bottling without fining or filtration. The result is a lively, light-bodied yet intense red in which fresh strawberry and cherry flavors are supported by subtle herbaceous and floral notes. Enjoy it with a semi-hard, nutty mountain cheese like Tiroler Bergkäse, Veal Saltimbocca or creamy tomato basil soup.
