Réva, an ancient estate that dates back to 1867, but had fallen into disrepair, when in 2011, a Piemontese wine collector brought together a group of local up and coming winemakers to revive it along with a chic and stunning resort. Their philosophy is to practice traditional winemaking by blending multiple plots for their estate cuvée while highlighting single vineyards and unique terroirs for their top wines of which Serralunga is among the most prestigious. Biodynamically farmed, 80+ year old Nebbiolo vines are rooted in granite soils alongside forests and hazelnut trees. Harvested by hand, rigorously sorted and 70% de-stemmed, the grapes are very gently pressed then fermented with native yeast on the skins for 40 days with a submerged cap for extra extraction. The wine is then aged in 228-liter Austrian oak barrels for an additional 30 months. The result is a tightly knit, world-class Barolo that straddles the line between a classic and modern Barolo. Aromas of balsam, cherry, and earthy woods are followed by flavors of ripe black cherry, plum, mint, leather, and tobacco with a firm, dry finish. Medium, almost light bodied but very muscular, it's absolutely delicious now but can easily age for 10-20 years. Pairs perfectly with a perfectly medium rare porterhouse, wild boar ragu or truffle risotto.
