Founded in 1650 by the Monteil family, the estate was passed down through generations, marriages, inheritances, and bankruptcies, eventually landing in the hands of the Pouget family, from which it received its name. It was owned by the Chavailles at the time of the French Revolution when it was sequestrated by the state - please don’t ask about their heads! In 1905, the Guillemet family took over and over many generations, have dedicated themselves to stewarding this exceptional Grand Cru. It’s a classic Left Bank blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6 % Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot from 45-ish year-old vines grown on sandy gravels deposited during the early Quaternary Period, about 2.6 million years ago, providing naturally excellent drainage. The grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed then macerated for 20 days in stainless steel before aging in split oak casks- 75% new oak- for around 15 months. The result is a deep, dark, and earthy red with firm ripe tannins, cassis, blackberry, vanilla, and cacao notes. Pair with pan-seared duck breast, dry aged porterhouse, or sautéed eggplant with roasted root veggies.
