NV Bailly Lapierre Cremant de Bourgogne Reserve Brut - Burgundy, France (750ml)
While Champagne can only be produced in the Champagne region (and mostly from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, along with a smattering of lesser-known legacy grapes that may still be used but can no longer be planted), many other regions in France produce high-quality sparkling wines from local grapes under the term “Crémant.” Crémant de Bourgogne may lead the pack in terms of comparison to the more famous sparkler due to both proximity as well as the overlap in native grapes. Bailly-Lapierre Réserve Brut is a clean and fresh Crémant where hand-harvested Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are joined by Burgundy’s other native grapes - Gamay and Aligoté. Aged for one year, this wine has a clean and fresh profile with a fine “bead” - the small bubbles that denote a quality sparkling wine. Lovely on its own, you can also try a nice light holiday cocktail by adding a splash of Creme de Cassis for a Kir Royale.
2018 Thevenet Macon Pierreclos Blanc - Burgundy, France (750ml)
Macon in the southernmost part of Burgundy and is a region where we can still find an excellent price-to-quality ratio as the cost of White Burgundy from the northern vineyards continues to rise year after year! This 100% Chardonnay is the flagship wine for Thevenet & Fils and is made from a selection from four different parcels within their family vineyards in the village of Pierreclos. It is unoaked for a light and elegant wine with hints of ripe yellow plums, lemon curd, and baked apple. This will work very well with butternut squash soup and can carry itself well with all the elements of your main course from the stuffing to the roast turkey itself.
2019 De Forville Barbera d'Alba - Piedmont, Italy (750ml)
Barbera is a wonderfully versatile grape varietal from Piedmont that is a go-to for sommeliers for pairing with a wide range of foods. De Forville selects grapes for this cuvée from estate vineyards the communes of Alba, Nieve, and Barbaresco, the latter two being vineyards that could be planted to the more lucrative Nebbiolo to make Barbaresco - a testament to the dedication of the family to produce the best fruit they can for this wine. Perfect for rich Thanksgiving fare, this Barbera d’Alba is full-bodied and well-balanced with a bright refreshing acidity over notes red and black fruit.
2019 Bodegas Ponce Clos Lojen Bobal - Manchuela, Spain (750ml)
Bodegas Ponce in Manchuela Castilla-La Mancha crafts their “Clos Lojen” from organic old-vine Bobal, Spain’s second most planted black grape after Tempranillo. One of the few producers dedicated to producing high-quality wines from Bobal only, Juan Antonio Ponce coaxes this prolific varietal into a medium-bodied black-fruited wine with firm tannins and an earthy peppery finish. Perfect with poultry as well cheese platters (try it with an Manchego for a local pairing!).
