2019 Balestri Valda Soave Classico - Veneto, Italy (750ml) - $18
Grown in the volcanic soil of Soave Classico, in Northern Italy, this fresh, mineral white is 100% Garganega. Farmed organically alongside their olive groves and bee hives, this medium-bodied, beautifully aromatic wine strikes a perfect balance between a lush mouthfeel and refreshing gluggability. There’s a lovely bouquet of white flowers on the nose, with ripe peach and citrus peel on the palate. Pair with traditional Venetian classics like Scampetti con Polenta!
2020 Maris Rose - Languedoc-Roussillon, France (750ml) - $16
On a sunny hillside in Southern France, winemaker Robert Eden took over the Maris estate in the late ‘80s, on a mission to grow the best possible fruit; this meant changing to biodynamic practices in the fields and the winery, and they’ve been certified organic since the early aughts. This pale, crisp rose, made of 100% Grenache, is a classic French summer treat, with notes of fresh red berries and a hint of tropical fruit. Amazing with hearty sourdough bread, taleggio, and a bright heirloom tomato salad with basil and olive oil.
2019 Bencze Blau - Hungary (750ml) - $32
This lovely, unusual, medium-bodied red from Hungary is vinified from Blauburger, a hybrid of the Eastern European varietals Blaufrankisch and Blauer Portugieser. The grapes are fermented whole-cluster, hand- (and foot-) crushed, and aged in stainless steel, with no fining, filtration or sulfur added. With notes of deep purple fruit, black olives, and a bit of barnyard funk, you’ll find this savory, medium-bodied wine tells the story of a vineyard on a hill above Hungary’s largest lake, and the volcanic soil you’ll find there. Try with a classic chicken paprikash!
2018 Fento Tinto - Rias Baixas, Spain (750ml) - $25
In a region dominated by Albarino, Fento connected with a coterie of small local growers who farm some of the best and rarest local varietals to craft this unique, red blend of 69% Sousón, 13% Mencía, 9% Espadeiro 8% Pedral and 1% ‘other varietals’. Many of the vineyards host spontaneous cover crops which result in more concentrated grapes, improve the soil's structure and avoid erosion. The harvest is done by hand with a very strict sorting. Amarena cherry and fresh blackberry with green and white pepper notes dominate the palate, then gently subside to reveal firm, dry tannins and minerality on the finish. Pairs perfectly with Iberico pork chops with rosemary, thyme and roasted turnips.
