NV Moonland Apples, Pears and Grapes Fruit Wine - CA (750ml) - $22
Moonland is a new project experimenting with fruit beyond grapes to discover new horizons while battling the current climate, weather, and other challenges. This is a somewhat fizzy cross between a cider and a petnat. It's made from a blend of organic apples and pears from Filigreen Farm & organic Picpoul (an adored white wine grape from the Languedoc) from Windmill Vineyard, Yolo County. The orchard fruits are co-fermented spontaneously, then a bit of Picpoul Blanc is added in the spring right before bottling - unfined, unfiltered and zero added SO2. It’s juicy, tangy and aromatic, super refreshing and easy to drink with a modest 9%abv. Serve with crepes, quiche or a cheese and charcuterie plate.
2022 Carboniste Extra Brut Albarino Gomes Vyd - California (750ml) - $37
Native to Spain and Portugal and known for producing slightly saline, lemony, and high acid wines, Albariño is relatively new to California, arriving only in the 90’s. This is a fresh, exciting, and sparkling take on the grape made in the Napa Valley by a husband and wife duo who pride themselves on making modern, terroir driven sparkling wines. After harvest, the grapes are pressed in their whole cluster and fermented in a tank with native yeasts for 3 weeks. Secondary fermentation happens in the bottle for a span of 2 months. The lemon peel and nectarine flavors of Albariño shine through, along with notes of gooseberry, kumquat and stone fruit blossoms. This a lovely aperitif, but would also pair with…octopus!
2021 Bodkin Muscat Canelli The Eyren - Lake County, California (750ml) - $25
Bodkin Wines is named after a type of arrowhead used with great success by peasant bowmen of England against the armored nobility of France during the Hundred Years’ War. The project comes from Chris Christensen – one of the most respected and influential Black winemakers in America (he’s also behind the Where’s Linus? wines), who is also a self-dubbed huge medieval history nerd. Chris founded Bodkin Wines in 2011, where he sources organic and sustainably grown grapes from vineyards across Northern California to produce his wines. The Eyren Muscat, named after the concrete eggs the wine ages in, is medium bodied and aromatic, full of citrus fruit and honeysuckle. The palate is bright and slightly creamy, with a hint of minerality and a clean finish. Pairs well with fish curry or not-too-sweet almond cake.
2021 Las Jaras Wines Glou Glou - Mendocino, CA (750ml) - $30
Las Jaras is a labor of friendship between a long-time California winemaker Joel Burt and comedian Eric Wareheim (of Master of None, Tim & Eric and Reality fame). Their Glou Glou red is a blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah, 6% Pinot Noir mostly form dry-farmed vineyards in Mendocino. Directly from Joel and Eric, “Most of the grapes underwent carbonic maceration, the classic fermentation method of the Beaujolais, which means that fermentation happened inside of berries themselves, causing them to explode in happy, boozy ecstasy. That’s how you’ll feel when you drink this wine—it dances in your mouth.” Pair with their faves- burgers, pizza and BBQ!
2021 Eminence Road Farm Winery Pinot Noir Lamb's Quarters Vineyard - Long Eddy, New York (750ml) - $28
Husband and wife team Andrew and Jennifer both left their jobs in bustling NYC to pursue a longtime passion for winemaking. They purchase fruit from sustainable finger lakes vineyards and vinify at their home cellar in Long Eddy, New York. Live the dream alongside them with this lovely Pinot Noir from the Lamb’s Quarters Vineyard. The fruit here is present and ripe with sweet red cherries and raspberries accented by subtle warm spice aromas. Solidly medium-bodied, with firm, dry tannins, it pairs beautifully with a beet and goat cheese salad or bbq chicken.
2020 Ridge Vineyards Three Valleys Zinfandel Blend - Sonoma County, CA (750ml) - $34
A blend of 73% Zinfandel, 10% Carignan, 13% Petite Sirah, 3% Montaro, and 1% Alicante Bouschet from seven different Sonoma County vineyards that come together in this outstanding blend. Ridge Vineyards has made Zinfandel the star grape with support from spicy Petit Sirah and fruity Carignan. Brambly wild raspberry and juicy black cherry aromas and flavors are well integrated with some baking spice notes. Medium-to-full-bodied with smooth, ripe tannins and an elegant finish, this pairs well with a thick cut sirloin steak or a Thanksgiving turkey!
