2018 Etienne Becheras Le Prieuré d'Arras Crozes-Hermitage - Rhone Valley, France (750ml)
The Northern Rhône produces some of the most sought-after reds wines in the world, produced in tiny amounts, that are frequently the highlights of auction lots year after year. While the wines of Hermitage, Cote-Rotie and Cornas can run into hundreds of dollars upon release - if you can get them - a great way to experience Syrah from the region is to find a producer with a range of top offerings and try their Crozes-Hermitage, a region where the prices are a lot more friendly than its more famous and hilly neighbor, Hermitage. Etienne Becheras produces 1,200 bottles a year of this wine, where you will find Syrah’s silky black fruit, black olive tapenade, campfire embers, and violets. Concentrated, yet not heavy, dark meat lovers will find this a perfect compliment to their holiday meal.
2018 Thevenet et Fils Bussieres Les Clos - Burgundy, France (750ml)
Even more so than White Burgundy, Red Burgundy can often be an expensive habit that is designated to an occasional splurge than a way to regularly enjoy Pinot Noir from its ancestral home. At Gnarly Vines we love to find wines that are reasonably priced, over-deliver, and truly express the terroir of their local region. We found exactly that in “Les Clos”, a Bourgogne Rouge from the village of Bussieres produced by the Thevenet family. The wine is a pure expression of perfectly ripe Pinot Noir, with black fruit notes underpinned with a hint of “sauvage”, that wild gamey note that adds complexity to some of the best Pinot Noirs from Burgundy. This is from south in Macon but drinks like a solid Cote de Nuits at a fraction of the price (like we said, over-deliver!).
2017 San Fereolo Valdiba Dolcetto di Dogliani - Piedmont, Italy (750ml)
Dolcetto is a native Piedmontese grape often referred to as “the wine that the winemakers drink while they are waiting for their Barolo to mature.” They’re a fussy lot, those Barolo producers, and in the right hands the grape can produce wines that can stand with the best from the region. San Fereolo is a Dolcetto specialist, with several Dolcetto cuvées in their line-up, and working within the Dogliano subregion, which is one premier vineyards for the grape. Dolcetto is known for flavors of black cherry, stewed plumes, with a hint of licorice. Its easy tannins make it a wine that pairs every well with poultry, and including this in your Thanksgiving line-up will be a delight whether it is on the big day or with leftover turkey sandwiches!
2018 Ridge Vineyards Three Valleys Zinfandel Blend - Sonoma County, California (750ml)
Zinfandel is considered the signature American black grape varietal, albeit with roots in Croatia via Puglia in Italy. It can produce very bold full-bodied red wines, and for many people it is synonymous with Thanksgiving. Ridge Vineyards (producer of one of the world’s finest wines in its Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon) as masters of Zindandel with several cuvées - often with minor blending partners - in their range. Their Three Valleys is a very fine expression of their varietal from Sonoma Country, joined by a little Petite Syrah, Carignan, and Mataro. It is a red-fruited expression with hints of cherry, plum, spice, and toast - full-bodied with supple tannins, and with plenty of clean acidity to pair perfectly with all your favorite rich Thanksgiving dishes.
