This historic estate, situated in the hills just south of Aix-en-Provence, has been in the hands of four generations of the Rougier family since 1830 and holds a virtual monopoly on the prestigious appellation of Palette, from which this stunning red hails. A tenacious yet deceptively elegant wine, it’s a blend primarily of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault but there are pockets of old-growth vines of Syrah, Manosquin, Castet, Carignan, Théoulier, Tibouren, Picpoul Noir Cabernet and Muscat Noir that contribute to the complexity of this wine. The influence of Mont Sainte Victoire, its surface covered in rich pine forest, is apparent in the flavors and aromas while Simone's north-facing microclimate and extremely old vines (up to 130 years) never fail to mitigate the intense Provençal heat. The 2011 vintage is spectacular and just reaching it’s prime (in 2024) with at least a decade ahead of it. Dark and brooding with black cherry and cassis flavors, savory, black olive and herbaceous, dried spice undertones, it’s fairly fully bodied but chiseled with firm, dry, mature tannins. Only 200 cases made it to the US. Pair with a perfectly seared porterhouse, a pink rack of lamb or a hearty caponata with aubergine, carrots, bell peppers, olives and an agrodolce tomoato—based sauce.
