André Hueston Mack founded Maison Noir Wines in 2007 after running the wine program at The French Laundry in Napa and then becoming the head Sommelier at Per Se in New York. Despite an early career in investment banking, a punk DIY sensibility drives this “micro-negociant.” Working with some of the finest vineyards in the Willamette Valley, Mack expertly blends fruit from a variety of appellations to produce complex, layered wines. This is doubly true of the 2019 vintage, considered by Mack to be his best bottling of Pinot Gris to date. A longer than usual growing season with cool autumn temperatures produced a wine with exceptionally refined acidity that tastes like “juggling apples, pears, and peaches while dancing to Pharrell’s ‘Happy’,” says Mack. Pair it with creamy mushroom toast or seared foie gras.
