CloseLa Ferme Rouge, in the heart of the AOG Zaër, benefits year-round from a cooling Atlantic influence and enjoys an exceptional mix of soils, from ancient sands to red (iron) clay ("Hamri"), limestone, shale, and nutrient-rich "Tirs." Grapes are organically farmed, hand-picked, pressed gently and fermented in temperature-regulated concrete vats prior to aging in used Burgundy barrels. Since the early 2000's, winegrower/maker Jacques Poulain (previously of Domaine Ouled Thaleb/Thalvin and Celliers du Meknes) has transitioned to farming organically and using winter crops to improve soil health. A full-bodied blend of Syrah and Tempranillo, the aromas of violet and a hint of mocha, lead to ripe, rustic black currant flavors on the palate and a firm, dry, tannic finish. Pairs well with robust dishes like beef bourguignon or a rosemary seared duck breast with dried apricots.
