2020 Gut Oggau Winifred Rose - Burgenland, Austria (750ml)
|Availability:||In stock (2)|
We don't normally pay too much attention to color but the extraordinary shimmering mauve of this rose definitely caught our attention. On the palate, this hard-core natural blend of Blaufrankish and Zweigelt exceeds its lofty expectations. It's slightly petillant with a whiff of gaminess and succulent wild strawberry and cranberry flavors. Medium bodied, with moderate acidity followed by a mouthwatering finish with discernibly dry tannins, winsome Winifred transcends the category of rosé and enters the pantheon of great, world-class wines. Pair with something unique and intense like Shime Saba (cured Mackerel sushi) or Unagi-don.
Made from 35 year old vines from biodynamic, Demeter-certified vineyards that are cultivated purely to make a world-class rose, so no saignée method. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and fermented in used 500, 1000 and 1500-liter barrels. The wine goes through elevage in 500-liter barrels for about 8 months, with no batonnage and is bottled unfined, unfiltered with zero addition of sulfur.
As for her place in the Gut Oggau fictitious family narrative, Winifred is the daughter from Timotheus’s first marriage, which ended suddenly when his wife disappeared mysteriously over night. Just like her cousins, Winifred has a winning and open personality, is sociable, and of a cheerful disposition. Upon a first encounter she can appear to be somewhat shy and reticent, but those that make her acquaintance remember her as a unique, refreshing and charming young lady with an inquisitive mind.
