Pedro Marques released his first Vale da Capucha vintage in 2009 after transforming his family's coastal estate into a winery and vineyards. He planted 13 hectares, all organically, with indigenous varietals that thrive in the oceanic climate 45 minutes northwest of Lisbon. Their Branco is made from 50% Fernão Pires, 35% Arinto, and 15% other regional varietals, that are gently pressed, fermented naturally in whole clusters with indigenous yeast and matured on the lees for 20 months in both stainless steel and various sizes of used oak barrels. Medium-bodied and crisp, with notes of grapefruit, honeysuckle, and hay, precise minerality and a hint of creaminess from malolactic fermentation, Fossil Branco pairs beautifully with grilled octopus, paella or a hard, salty cheese.
