2019 Rocchi Vernaccia Nera Spumante Secco - San Ginesio, Marche, Italy (750ml)

From the San Ginesio DOC in the Marche region of Italy, this red sparkling is made from at least 85% Vernaccia Nera, an indigenous grape that’s believed to be related to Grenache. Rocchi uses an extended Charmat fermentation for 6 months; the carbon dioxide is trapped in large pressurized tanks to contain the bubbles (this is how Prosecco is made as well)! Delicious, refreshing with ripe black cherry and raspberry, frothy bubbles and a dry finish with just enough tannin, Rocchi, though not as widely known, is an excellent alternative to Emilia-Romagna’s ubiquitous Lambrusco and an equally ideal companion for pizza, burgers or antipasta.
