From the San Ginesio DOC in the Marche region of Italy, this red sparkling is made from at least 85% Vernaccia Nera, an indigenous grape that’s believed to be related to Grenache. Rocchi uses an extended Charmat fermentation for 6 months, in which the carbon dioxide is trapped in a large, pressurized tank so the bubbles can’t escape. This method, which is simple and cost effective is the same that's used for Prosecco. This wine is delicious and refreshing with ripe black cherry and raspberry flavors, frothy bubbles and a dry finish with just enough tannin. Though not as widely known, it’s an excellent alternative to Emilia-Romagna’s ubiquitous Lambrusco and an equally ideal companion for pizza, burgers or antipasta
