Brooklyn, NY—In November, Gnarly Vines celebrated its official opening with a wine tasting event attended by several hundred Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill community leaders and residents. Founded and owned by Ft. Greene resident Brian Robinson, the store is now poised to serve this exciting and diverse Brooklyn neighborhood and beyond.

Gnarly Vines takes a refreshing, open-minded approach to wine—it's all about enjoyment, adventure and value. Delivering on the "enjoyment factor" is never in doubt, as owner Robinson and his staff will not put a wine on their shelves unless they actually like it. Most of these wines are handcrafted by small producers following sustainable or stricter vineyard practices. The handpicked selections make it easy for customers to delight in the diversity of wine from around the world. "People are often adventurous about food, but then they play it safe when it comes to choosing wine," notes owner Robinson. "We're out to change that."

A highly experienced wine expert and collector, Robinson follows the French tradition of the caviste , a wine specialist who doesn't merely sell bottles of wine but instead focuses on understanding the customer and offering practical wine suggestions based on tastes and needs. "We consider wine to be an integral part of the dining experience," Robinson explains, "and we want to help our customers discover the array of flavors and sensations that are created when good wine is paired with food."

The Gnarly Vines shop itself is spacious, comfortable, and tastefully designed—an oasis of calm on bustling Myrtle Avenue. Below artfully framed photos, angular steel shelves jut from the exposed brick walls, cradling the carefully selected bottles of wine. Music, overstuffed leather sofas, and an old farm table at the rear of the shop help to create a relaxing, low-key environment perfectly suited to the purpose

The shop's substantial website will offer information and resources about wine, and allow customers to log in to view their purchases, rate them, and comment on them. Additionally, the educational program will include regular in-store tastings, food and wine pairing events, and customized services and advice to collectors of all levels.
