Join us Wednesday, May 9th, starting at 6pm to welcome back one of our favorite artist/customers

brittny teree smith

for a viewing of her collection “NW YORK”

Wines featured at the reception:

NV Lamberti Sparkling Rose- Veneto, Italy – $14
Powerful aromas of ripe strawberries, cranberries and flowers introduce fresh, fruity flavors with good energy and pleasant acidity. Try with a fresh-fruit dessert pizza or soft cheeses. The grapes for this wine (34% Pinot Bianco, 33% Raboso, 33% Pinot Nero) come from superior vineyards across the Treviso in Italy’s Veneto region.

2010 Cuma Torrontes – Cafayate Valley, Argentina – $14
New York Times panel tasted 20 Torrontes and named Torino’s Cuma the best of the bunch – and also the best value! Like the nicest Torrontes from Argentina, this one is intensely aromatic, with ripe cantaloupe and orange flavors, a touch of honeysuckle and a hint of ginger. Fantastic with spicier ethnic food. 2009 Ridge East Bench Zinfandel – Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County, CA – $28 This is yet another unbelieveably classic Zin from Ridge. The 2009 East Bench is 100% Zinfandel and simply bursting with fruit. 100% of the wine is aged in new and seasoned American oak, adding a stand-up straight backbone of spice and tannic grippiness to this big, inky wine. Notes of black pepper, cedar, and baking spice only add to the complexity to this decadent wine.

2010 Chateau Haut Vigneau – Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France – $24
For the Left Bank lovers out there, this red from Pessac-Leognan – land of the famed Haut Brion – is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, and spends a year lingering in oak before bottling. It’s got the gumption of classic Bordeaux – aromas of dark, delicious fruits (think blackberries and cassis), gorgeously good tannic grip, and the kind of balance that makes us want to grab a few of these and see how they do over the next five or ten years. But meanwhile? We’ll settle for a black n’ blue filet on the grill. 15% off featured wines during the tasting!

Dreaming Italian; Imagining Argentina
Friday, May 11th, 6-9pm

If you’ve ever spent any time in Argentina, you might have noticed that not only do an awful lot of the last names end in a vowel, their Spanish is peppered with “Ciaos!” and other bits and bites of La Lingua Italia, not to mention their love affair with the Italian red grape, Bonarda (which they do quite well with, thank you very much!). So in honor of this lovely little bi-continental friendship, we thought we’d do a little Ital-Argentine sippin’ session – because what better way is there to spend a Friday night?

2010 Castello di Luzzano Bonarda Frizzante – Oltrepo Pavese, Lombardy, Italy – $17
Say hello to Lombardy’s answer to the ubiquitous Lambrusco from Emilia Romagna. This fizzy Bonarda is deeper, darker, firmer and drier than the ocean of stuff coming from the region next-door. The intense black raspberry fruit, assertive tannins and moderate bubbles pair perfectly with cured meats – and go nicely with the rest of the meal.

2010 Terredora Dipaolo Falanghina – Campania, Italy – $15
The full-on yowza potential of this fruit (estate-grown, thank you very much) will absolutely blow you away – especially when you reallize this 100% Falanghina from comely Campania is made entirely in stainless steel. That spiciness there? That’s the grape! So is the luscious, creamy body, notes of yellow apple and pear, and the lingering bits of candied ginger on the finish. Find the nearest fishmonger slinging soft shell crabs, fry ‘em up, and slather on some lemony mayo for a decadent summery supper treat.

2010 Corte dei Papi ‘Colle Ticchio’ Cesanese – Lazio, Italy – $17
From the DOCG of Cesanese di Piglia comes this a funny little red wine from grapes grown in the soils of the Ernici Mountains in the Lazio region of Italy, just southeast of Rome. Made mostly from the persnickety Cesanese di Affile, this medium-bodied sipper has a black-peppery nose, a mouthful of blackberry fruit, and a dry, tea-leaf finish that leaves you smacking your lips and deaming of seared lamb chops. 2010 Bodega Noemia ‘A Lisa’ Malbec – Rio Negro Valley, Argentina – $20 When most of us think Malbec we think Mendoza – but this one hails more than 600 miles from the big M in Rio Negro, where an Italian countess and a Danish winemaker discovered a Malbec vineyard planted in the 30s and scooped it up tout de suite. Some of the grapes for A Lisa – 90% Malbec with a little Merlot and Petit Verdot rounding out things – come from the biodynamically farmed vines Noemia planted in ’04, and when you taste this wine you’ll get why the countess found it such a special place. The nose is posy of summer violets, with ripe, luscious black plum and black cherry on the palate, but with a medium, restrained body that doesn’t get carried away with itself. In other words, this is one elegant Malbec. We dig it with duck. 15% off all wines featured at the tasting!

“Hey, your Julep is in my Margarita.”

“Um, I think it’s your Margarita that’s in my Julep…”

Now, now – before this tipple-off turns tyranical and you feel the urge to step outside, step on inside instead, friends. It’s Derby Day and Cinco de Mayo! And we can think of no better way to honor these noble celebrations than with their respective cocktails made with stellar spirits. We’ll be mixin’ up Woodford Juleps and Herradura Margaritas tonight at Gnarly Vines for your sipping pleaseure, and just because we’re feeling extra celebratory, we got the folks from Woodford to come on in with their super-special bottle engraving gizmo, so you can even personalize yours. Cheers!

Herradura Silver Tequila – Jalisco, Mexico (1L) – $32
This 100% blue agave (what else would it be made of, for Mayahuel’s sake?!) hails from the lowlands of Jalisco – e.g., tequila central – and is easily one of our Margarita faves. Why? Its pretty notes of fresh herbs and citrus juice and zest seem to beg for a squeeze of lime, a splash of Cointreau, and a zippy rim of salt. Mmmm.

Woodford Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon – Versailles, KY (200ml) – $14

Woodford Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon – Versailles, KY (375ml) – $25

Woodford Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon – Versailles, KY (750ml) – $42

Woodford Reserve ‘Kentucky Derby 138′ Bourbon – Versailles, KY (1L) – $54

Woodford Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon – Versailles, KY (1.75L) – $78
The official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby! Well-rounded and sophisticated, this Bourbon has bouquet of lightly roasted kernel, tobacco, and walnut precedes a caramel-like and peppery palate. Equally comfortable being sipped on its own, or mixed in a Mint Julep when the horses are on the track at Churchill Downs tomorrow night at 6:24pm!

This Saturday afternoon, the Fort Greene Association will be hosting a super-fun fundraiser that starts with brunch, takes you on a house tour of four of Fort Greene’s gorgeous historical homes, and ends in evening at Gnarly for a little sipping among friends. The tasting here is open to all – and just like our lovely nabe, filled with the old and the new. There are a few tickets left for the tour if you want to get in on the whole shebang – click here for tickets and details. We heart Fort Greene!

NV Familia Schroeder ‘Deseado’ Sparkling Torrontes – Patagonia, Argentina – $17.50
Unique, Charmat-method sparkling wine from Patagonia, Argentina made from 100% Torrontes. The sweet, floral flavors are complemented by stony minerality and a full texture. This is a fruity and elegant match with goat cheese and fruit.

2009 Domaine du Tremblay Quincy – Loire Valley, France – $20
This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is fruitier and plumper than sharper expressions found in nearby Sancerre. Nearly organic handling of the fruit combined with modern techniques preserves delicate aromas of white flowers and bright fruit followed by a full palate. A great value for a Loire Sauvignon Blanc.

2010 Pago de Valdoneje Mencia – Bierzo, Spain – $15
These Mencia grapes come from 50-100 year old vines that produce robust blackberry fruit flavors tinged with a hint of pepper. A firm structure adds balance to this modern-style, medium-bodied red. The family has been making wine for generations but only began exporting in 2001.

2008 Frogmore Creek 42 degrees South Pinot Noir – Tasmania, Australia – $20
Pinot Noir from Tasmania? Absolutely! Frogmore Creek makes fruit-driven wines, and this one is no exception. It’s silky in texture with loads of cherry fruit and a hint of smokiness. Soft tannins and a light touch of vanilla make for a balanced, devilishly good wine.

What do we bring to the table this time? A little friendly-fight competition, if you will. Both Long Island and the Finger Lakes have been known to make knock-out Cabernet Franc, oh-so sippable Sauv Blancs, and even one ringer LI producer has come out swingin’ with some Chenin. But the Loire Valley? Well, they’ve long been the reigning Champion of these comely grape varietals. So we’ve decided to put ‘em the ring together with the best ref ever — the food-pairing stylings of locavore-loving iCi Restaurant right here in Fort Greene. Which bottles will float like a butterfly with acidity that stings like a bee? Catch a ring-side seat at the table at iCi and you decide!

No, this is not a personal ad for Penelope Cruz seeking Sean Connery. But there is something about this unpredictable spring that has us wanting to bust through barriers and maybe even break a few rules. Inspired by the fearless, bold, and absolutely undaunted nature of the Spaniards and the Scots, we decided to celebrate their splendid spirit (and, in the case of the Scots, spirits) with a little wine n’ whisky mash-up. We suggest that, unlike some people you may know, you enjoy them responsibly to reap all the joy that each inspires…

2010 El Hada Verdejo/Viura – Rueda, Spain – $12
Fruity, fresh Verdejo and Viura blend. Ripe white peach, melon and citrus flavors take center stage, along with zesty acidity to liven things up. A tasty, thirst-quenching white that’s perfect for those first trepidatious attempts at firing up the coals and gettin’ your grilled porkchop on.

2010 Honoro Vera Garnacha – Calatayud, Spain – $11
From the hot, Mediterranean climes of Aragon comes this ripe, out and out raucous red that offers an explosion of thyme, wild-berries, and spice on the nose and right on through to your mouth. Subtle tannins keep it plush, and make you want to run right for nearest hunk o’ ham and Manchego cheese to have alongside it.

================

Two Scotches from the same distillery made in alternating years – one unpeated, the other peated:

Tobermory 10yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Isle of Mull, Scotland (750ml) – $50

Unpeated and elegant, Tobermory is smooth and velvety up front, with tangy fruit, exquisite gingerbread spice and a hint of aniseed. The finish brings in layers of fresh oak, baker’s chocolate, almond and a little seaspray.

Ledaig 10yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Isle of Mull, Scotland (750ml) - $50
Where there’s smoke there’s fire? Hmm. Well, in this case, we’d like to alter that old adage: Where there’s smoke there’s spice. And salt. And Cream. And… well, you get the point — this is one complex, kickin’ kilt-wearing sip of a Scotch. A little smokey, a little
briny, a little white pepper all floating along on a soft, slightly vanilla-tinged creamy body. Not a beginner’s Scotch, but a beautiful representation for the peated whisky lovin’ crowd.

The McKenzie men aren’t actually brothers – but whiskey is thicker than water. While their shared last name is purely coincidental, you’ve gotta wonder if thier mutual love and commitment to fine, handcrafted American whiskey isn’t born of something kismet-ly connected. Finger Lakes Distilling’s Brian McKenzie and Thomas Earl McKenzie(pictured above) source the grapes, grains, and fruit for their bourbon, rye, gin, vodka, and fruit liqueurs from around 30 local upstate New York farms, do all the work on-premises (FYI: some so-called artisanal craft spirit makers buy pre-made, unaged spirit and simply barrel-age it themselves–pfff!), mashing and distilling spirits in their 300-gallon, 20-foot-tall, copper-pot still.

Ain’t she purdy? So’s what comes out of her…

Finger Lakes Distilling Pear Brandy – Burdett, NY (375ml) – $27.50
Handcrafted in the Old World fashion, FLX Distilling sources their fruit locally, and you know what? You really can tell. This brandy beauty has such fresh n’ fabulous orchard pear on the nose and palate, you’d think it was just harvested yesterday. Yum.

Finger Lakes Distilling White Pike Whiskey – Burdett, NY (750ml) – $36
Local corn, spelt, and malted wheat make up the mash for this smooth, spritely, buttery, toasty clear-as-day sippin’ whiskey. Although, actually, sometimes we like mixin’ it up, too (the McKenzie fellers suggest anything from pickle juice to pomegranate, but they’re just wacky like that).

Finger Lakes Distillery McKenzie Rye Whiskey – Burdett, NY (750ml) – $44
Seriously, we’re just gonna throw down and say it: One of the very, very best craft American whiskies out there right now. Aged in sherry casks, this 100% NY state grain-sourced Rye is aged in part in new American charred oak casks, and then finished in small sherry barrels, gracing it woith fruity, vanilla-bean flavors and a silky mouthfeel, but with that underlying herby, spiciness that we love in Rye. Use in a proper Manhattan, but of
course.

As happenstance would have it, gentleman owner/winemaker/chief-cook-and-bottle-washer Dave Grooters (because in a 3,000 case-a-year operation like this, you’re rolling up your sleeves, by gum) came into our shop this week for a quick tasting of his Pinot Gris and Pinot Noirs from the Willamette Valley of Oregon. And you know what? We were so smitten, right then and there we took on his expressive, absolutely enchanting wines for our shelves (from his LIVE certified, organically farmed vineyards, too, not fer nuthin). Dig it! Here’s what we’ve got — his production is incredibly small, so once this is gone, it ain’t comin’ back. Catch a little fleeting beauty while you can:

2010 Carlton Cellars “Canon Beach” Pinot Gris – Willamette Valley, OR – $17
Okay, first things first: If you are of the off-dryish loving Pinot Gris crowd, this is going to surprise you. It’s dry, friends. Elegantly, crispity, lip-smackingly dry. But that’s not to be
taken as a Masterpiece Theater-esque personality description. No, no, no. This Pinot Gris has life! Grapefruity, zesty, citrusy, zippy life. And its got surprises, too — like a nifty, silky bit of creaminess that pops up mid-palate, and some lovely pear notes, and long, star-anise spicy finish.

2009 Carlton Cellars “Seven Devils” Pinot Noir – Willamette Valley, OR – $22
This is the thing about really good Oregon Pinot–it’s got all the fruit that you love, but a bit of restrained elegance to it that keeps the whole kit and caboodle from seeming like some goofy, flailing cartoon of a wine, like some others we know. And CC’s entry-level Pinot Noir is no Mickey n’ Minnie show, kids. This wine is swellegant yet sassy, with a nose full of black cherries, thyme, and rosemary. The gorgeous, ripe, slightly brambly fruit continues on the palate with a little bit o’ spice and sweet tannins that offer a subtle yet firm grip.

2009 Carlton Cellars “Cape Lookout” Pinot Noir – Willamette Valley, OR $30
What you’ve got here is 100% organic, estate-grown fruit, that offers an incredibly silky mouthfeel and sweet herbs, violets, wild summer strawberries and cherries on the nose. In your mouth, the fruit is intense and concentrated, but never bulky or rude. It’s fresh, spicy, and succulent — the most elegant of dinner companions if you happen to have, say, a nice bit of Long Island duck breast to roast.

A Spanish Sandwich on Italian Bread? Ole!

Thursday, April 5th, 6-9pm

Now, we definitely dig that old chestnut, “What grows together, goes together,” but we also believe there’s a global vino village of flavor out there that makes for some pretty exciting dinner partners between the Old World and the New – or the Old and the Old, or the New and the New, or the Old and the New and the Old, or the… awww, you get the picture. Dig in! And while our Italy-Spain-Spain-Italy line-up this Thursday night is old country in continental grapey locale, we’ve got a world of flavor in store for you, regardless of whether you’re hankerin’ for Thai take-out or a fabulously festive spring feast. Salut!

2011 Elvio Tintero Sori Gramela Moscato d’Asti – Piedmont, Italy – $29
Ambrosia in a bottle! Sweet gardenia and honey flavors foiled by lovely fizz and a fresh, clean finish. This is a treat to drink, and since it’s not cloyingly sweet or heavy, it pairs well with salty, spunky cheeses or a honey-tinged almond tart for dessert.

2010 Gramona Gessami – Penedes, Spain – $20
An exotic, spicy blend of Muscat de Frontignan, Muscat d’Alexandria, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gewurztraminer. Intense peach and passionfruit notes with a hint of residual sugar tempered by just enough acidity. Medium body, clean, focused, and smooth – Gessami is beyond fabulous with spicy, Asian and African cuisine!

2008 Almansenas ‘La Huella de Adaras’ – Almansa, Spain – $14.50
This is a blend of 60% Garnacha Tintorera, 30% Monastrell, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from a group of young winemakers in Spain, and their energy bleeds into their wine. The Adaras is full of fresh fruit and a devil-may-care herbal streak that adds a little vigor to the smooth finish. Silence of the lambs? Pfff. You’ll be shouting that pairing’s praises to the rafters.

2007 Le Bertille Rosso di Montepulciano – Tuscany, Italy – $21
When Olimpia Roberti decided to go from valise-holding lawyer to vine-loving winemaker in 2000, converting her family’s Montepulciano vacation home to a 30-acre winery, her parents didn’t balk. They knew their smart cookie of a daughter was onto something. We agree. Roberti is clever enough to know that modern winemaking techniques allow for clear, clean expression of her wines. But she also has the kind of respect for tradition that nods to the great wines of Italy’s past. Here, her medium-bodied blend of mostly Prugnolo Gentile (the local name for Sangiovese) with a little Ciliegiolo is rife with ripe, red cherry fruit but with a classic, cedary, structured feel that let’s you know this ageworthy red is no flash in the pan. Although speaking of…bresaola, please!

Dry Whites:

2007 Tishbi Chenin Blanc Kosher – Israel - $14
100% Chenin Blanc from Israel that’s fresh and a little minerally with lush melon fruit flavors and hints of apricots and peaches – all folded into a round, soft, supple texture. And all Mevushal Kosher, but of course.

2010 Tishbi Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Kosher – Israel - $14
100% Sauvignon Blanc with floral aromas in a light, straightforward style with plenty of crisp acidity. Simple and fresh, with a touch of nut on the finish. Mevushal Kosher.

Dinner Reds:

2007 Herzog Selection Kosher Merlot – Bordeaux, France - $15
When Mani just won’t cut it, this Bordeaux-born red will please even the most serious sippers at your seder. Here, we’ve got plush plum and blackberry fruit, with a dark note of herb and licorice and fine, savory tannins keeping the fruit in check in this full-bodied dinner diva from France.

2007 Baron Herzog Kosher Merlot – Central Coast, CA – $15
Ripe, silky Merlot with soft tannins and a plush texture. Black raspberry fruit flavors border on jammy but stay balanced and get a nice touch of cedar in the background. This is a tasty, easy-drinking red.

2010 Tishbi Baron Herzog Kosher Merlot – Central Coast, CA – $15
This unoaked, fresh blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah from northern Israel has a medium-light body and texture with dry, soft tannins and a little pepper on the finish.

Dessert!

2011 Bartenura Kosher Moscato – Italy – $15
Crisp and refreshing, semi sweet, with lingering melon and pear flavors. Sip this chilled with your favorite after-dinner sweet treat.

2009 Weinstock Cellars – Red by W – California – $11
A silky, semi-sweet blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, and Black Muscat that’s fruit-forward and velvety, and oh-so easy going. Scandalously smooth and delicious!

Rashi Light Red Concord, Kosher/Mevushal – New York – $6.50
Lighter, fresher, and better than Manischevitz, Rashi should be your choice for a traditional Mevushal Seder wine. The inspiring image of the 950-year old Rashi Synagogue on the label conjures images of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof singing ‘Tradition’ to get you in the Passover spirit. And at this price, you can be a rich man too!

Cherry Blossoms = SAKE!

Thursday, Mar 29th, 6-9pm

15% off featured wines during the tasting!

First things first — despite what your momma told ya, sake ain’t wine. It’s actually a brewed beverage with a lot more in common with beer from that point of view. But let’s forget the tomato/tomahto technicalities for a moment because sake is it’s own, wonderful unique little special sipping experience. Quality sake is basically divided into three categories — junmai, junmai ginjo, and junmai daigingo (all served chilled, just so’s ya know) — based on how finely the outside husk of the rice kernal is milled. Generally, the more refined the rice, the more delicate the aromas, textures, and flavor of the sake, which also tend to me higher an alcohol than wine, so watch out! A lot of sippin’ can sneak up on you. But that’s also why sake is truly meant to be sampled alongside food, along with its complex, uber-fascinating mouthfeel and flavors. We recently tasted through some new releases of some of our favorite sakes that we’re excited to share with you this week…

Akitabare Koshiki Junsukuri – Northern Skies – Junmai Sake – Akita Prefecture, Japan (720ml) – $29

The Northern Skies junmai is kind of like the perfect party hostess — that person who subtley keeps things moving along seemlessly so that all the planets align. This sake is delicately mild and pleasingly dry on the palate, and can take you from aperitif to wasabi-spiked dumplings to tempura (or, hell, fried chicken – why not?) without a hitch.

Yoshida Tedorigawa Kinka ‘Gold Blossom’ Nama Daiginjo Sake – Japan (720ml) – $39
Rich in body and a little spicy and herby on the nose, pop this sake in the ‘fridge for a quick chill down, head to the best fish shop you know, and nab some super high-grade tuna to go with. Rub it with a little lemon zest, dill, and sea salt, do a quick sear on the grill, and see how the Gold Blossom opens the flavors of the dish.

Kamoizumi Nigori Ginjo ‘Summer Snow’ Unfiltered Sake – Japan (500ml) – $30
We saved this one for last because, yeah baby, we want the funk! This is no beginner’s sake (not because you can’t handle it; it’s just good to get your bearings before you fly your freak flag, dig?). The Summer Snow (in addition to having such a lovely name) is a total sensory journey. It starts out flowery on the nose, and then embraces all Mother Earth’s delights — it’s earthy, full of rich fruit, and a deep, bass-plucking funk of mushroom underneath it all. Go for shortribs braised with reconstituted porcini tossed in to really tease out this sake’s funkadelic side.

——————————————————————————–

Pop Goes the Minervois

Friday, Mar 30th, 6-9pm

15% off all wines featured at the tasting!

NV Montaudon Champagne Brut – Champagne, France – $36
Founded in 1891 in the heart of Reims, the house of Mountaudon came to prominence in the 1930s as the exclusive supplier of Champagne to Josephine Baker’s cabaret in Paris. Montaudon’s classic brut is fresh and juicy, with a pretty floral not winding through crisp apple and apricot flavors. A smoky undertone adds depth to the lingering finish. Break out the oysters Bienville and have at it!

2008 Chateau Maris ‘Nouvelles Fraiches’ Grenache – Minervois, France – $26
Fresh and vibrant, we fell hard for the ripe, robust red fruits in this southern-skewed sipper and the firm, scaffold-centric tannins that hold it all together like good bones should. A great example of Grenache at its most lovely. Try your hand at a pork rillette with this next time the in-laws come for dinner.

2009 Chateau Maris ‘Natural Selection’ Syrah – Minervois, France – $20
Smoky and sexy, this is a gorgeous example of why Minervois is the rising star region of southern France, and a stand-out biodynamic producer to boot. Here, we find notes of black cherries and raspberries, black plums, and pepper, with some great wild-horse gaminess on the nose and rich, full body and ripe tannins that go great with roasted lamb sausage and sage.

2009 Chateau Maris ‘Les Planels’ Syrah – Minervois, France – $42
The Les Planels teases out the floral notes that can be so lovely in Syrah, with a waft of violets that hits your nostrils, and a rich, fresh n’ ripe plumminess, grounded notes of earth minerals, and a firm, keepin’-it-together tannic structure that makes this wine so wonderfully food friendly and even a little elegant.

——————————————————————————–

Gimme Some Spritz n’ Spice!

Saturday, Mar 31st, 5-8pm

15% off all wines featured at the tasting

2011 Erste & Neue Gewurtraminer – Alto Adige, Italy – $18.50

Floral and exotic, this super sexy Gewurz ain’t your granny’s pot pourri. The aromas harken more toward crushed rose petals and lusty lychee, with a full, rich mouthfeel that gets just the right amount of northern Italian, Alp-influenced balancing acidity. Seared scallops with diced orange-and-ginger spiked sea scallops are killer with this.

2010 Familia Mayol Pircas Vineyard Bonarda – Vista Flores, Mendoza, Argentina – $14

Bonarda is another one of those great New World success stories – a European varietal that did a-okay where it’s from, but left the nest and became a star once it got out of its small-town digs. Originally from Italy, Bonarda came to Argentina with its multitude of Italian immigrants in the first and second third of the 20th century. Mayol’s comes from a high-altitude area known as Vista Flores in the region Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza. It’s lush and pretty full-bodied with aromas of violet and dark fruit flavors, sufficient structure, and a little spice. The palate is surprising rich, but kept fresh by vibrant, food friendly acidity. Pair with a flavorful ragu.

2010 Domaine de Montvac – Cotes du Rhone, France – $17

A fabulous example of how Cotes du Rhone can be such a complex, brambly beauty — we love the notes of super ripes summer blackberries, plums, peppery spice, and dried fists-full of Provencal herbs. Vive la charcuterie!

2007 Vinedo del los Vientos Tannat IGT – Atlantida, Uruguay – $17

Tannat can sometimes be a little bit of a sock to the jaw left to less-deft hands, but Vinedo del los Vientos seems to has the right idea, letting this brambly red varietal express its spicy, black fruit and tannic nature, but with a mind toward restraint that keeps it from running away with with your tastebuds. Go for grilled lamb with a healthy does of rosemary and kosher salt here.

Can’t get in for the tastings? No worries — we do phone and email orders, too!

2008 Chahut & Prodiges Coup de Canon – $21

Oh, Grolleau. You much-overlooked little vinous vixen, you. This Loire-centric varietal has long been the source of much quenching rose from Anjou (and some sparkling, too), but never really gets much ado about anything. Here, to really make the fruit pop and play with this grape’s great acidity, it gurgles around for a few week’s worth of carbonic maceration, teasing out lots of zingy blackberry fruit, but it’s also got intriguing savory notes of spice and forest-floor earthiness. Like the roses it tends to adorn, this Grolleau is super quenching and out-and-out delicious with a lamb burger or even some herb-flecked sausage pizza.

2010 Herve Souhaut Romaneaux-Destezet Gamay ‘La Souteronne’ – Rhone, France - $26
Herve Souhaut makes this Rhone red from 100 year old organically farmed grapes, which clues you in the kind of complexity you can expect here. Like what, you ask? Think dark n’ stormy black fruit the likes of tiny, wild blackberries and bits of clove and star anise, and a pretty bit of violet on the nose. In your mouth, that wild, pretty burst of fruits and spice continues, with a black peppercorn finish that is a shoo-in for lamb stew with thyme and sweet potatoes.

2010 Herve Souhaut Romaneaux-Destezet Syrah – Rhone Valley, France – $28
This is one of those wines you really want to assign human qualities and emphatic punctuation to, like charming! Entrancing! Beguiling! In fact, if Audrey Tautou were a wine, we think she’d be this one. This organic Syrah from the Northern Rhone starts out with breathtaking, early summer, floral aromatics–really, it smells like crushed rose petals are at the bottom of your glass, and its medium-light body hits your tongue like dappled sunlight–not what we expect from the usual spicy, meatiness of Syrah, but all the more delightful in its refreshing, pure red fruits and sweet herbs doing their little Amelie dance on your palate, making it a good dinner date for pan-seared wild salmon or even loin pork chops.

2008 La Grapperie Adonis – Loire Valley, France – $25

Renaud Guettier plows his vineyards with a horse, grows his grapes organically and harvests by hand. The majority of his 4 hectares (10 acres) of vines are Pinot d’Aunis, but this blend also includes a little Cot (malbec) and Gamay. It’s chock full of ripe, brambly fruit and a little black pepper. Good with venison stew or braised oxtail.

A white with grip, a Minervois to mull over, and a brambly red blend to stoke the flames of the stove or grill (and mayhaps your wine-loving heart?).

2010 Domaine Cheveau Macon Chaintre ‘Les Clos’ – Burgundy, France – $20

All harvesting at the Domaine Cheveau is done by hand. After pressing, the Chardonnay is allowed to settle before being transferred to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Ageing continues on fine lees for a touch of creaminess and complexity. The end product is a clean, crisp, traditional white Burgundy for a great price when compared to its neighbors to the North in Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet. Pair with chicken salad or sauteed snapper.

2009 Castello di Monastero Coenobium – Lazio, Italy – $24
Made by nuns at the Monastero Suore Cistercensi, the Coenobium is a blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Verdicchio. The antithesis of chaste, this white sees a lot of skin contact, which gives it an oxidative quality that layers minerals and a faint nuttiness with just the right amount of acidity. It will vow you! Perfect with calamari or sardines.

2009 ‘Pezzalunga’ Vercesi del Castelazzo – Lombardy, Italy – $16.50
If you had an Italian great-grandfather living in Lombardy, this is the wine he would be shuffling out to his barn to make. It’s a ripe but rustic blend of Bonarda, Barbera, Uva Rara, and Vespolina that’s smoky and woodsy with brambly fruit and a streak of freshness. Think red-tiled roofs and cypress trees bending in the wind. Pair with spaghetti and meatballs or penne pomodoro.

2008 Massiac Minervois – Languedoc-Rousillon, France – $15
This blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Carignan is ripe and accessible. Aromas of raspberries and dried herbs give way to jammy red fruit and supple tannins on the palate. A wine that conveys the sunshine of Southern France. Perfect for steak, lamb or olive tapenade.

Jameson $11 (200ml hip flask); $18 (375ml half-btl)

The classic! Ol’ Jameson’s is one of those hip-pocket whiskies (not meaning flasks, but, you know, we wouldn’t stop you) – smooth and sultry enough to sip neat and easy going enough to mix up in cocktail. We like its mellow fruitiness and combo of mild spice and vanilla bean notes from the time it spends divided between sherry and bourbon casks.

Tullamore Dew (1Ltr) – $32

Tully has inviting aromas of lemon, spice and vanilla followed by light and sweet citrus flavors with some grassy notes. This is a smooth, easy-sipping Irish whiskey with depth that’s triple-distilled and aged in oak. The finish lingers warm and toasty, perfect on it’s own or with a little soda water.

Bushmills 10 Yr Old (750ml) – $38.40

A big step up from the standard Bushmills at just a fraction more because of our steep double discount). Triple distilled from 100% malted barley and matured for a minimum of 10 years, mainly in Bourbon-seasoned barrels. Aromas of honey, vanilla and milk chocolate introduce a soft, easy mouthfeel that carries a hint of toasted oak. Finishes crisp and clean.

Redbreast Pure Pot Still 12 Yr Old Irish Whiskey (750ml) – $54

The crown jewel of the esteemed Midleton Distillery, this Irish Whiskey is from the same distillery that produces Jameson’s. Redbreast has a big butterscotchy, brown sugar flavor with pronounced peppery notes, and a finish as long and smooth as a well-told Irish story.

Knickers Irish Cream Whisky (750ml) – $17.50

Made in Abbeyleix, Ireland. Makes the best Irish coffee!

Other products on sale that won’t be in the tasting:

Sure, you could hole up tonight, heat up leftovers, and watch “Survivor” — but we’ve got a better idea…Come gaze upon artist Paul Keim’s breathtaking depictions of some of nature’s fine-feathered survivors, and toast them with a few of our favorite pieces of art, too…

2010 Domaine Marcel Deiss Blanc – Alsace, France - $20

Jean-Michel Deiss has been famous (and sometimes, even a little infamous), for his celebration and adherence to field blends, mixing up grape varietals in the ground and the tank. He also likes to push the envelope for picking, too, letting his grapes hang a little longer to develop intense flavors and mouthfeel, like in this mostly Riesling, 13-varietal blend. There’s some Pinot Blanc and Gewurztraminer in the mix, lending to an intensely aromatic, richly ripe, pure, and delicious white with notes of pear and star anise. Spice-rubbed roasted turkey breast is terrific with this!

2009 Domaine Marcel Deiss Riesling – Alsace, France – $24

Seared sea scallops with lime-zest butter and ginger. Mmmm. That’s what you want to eat with this focused, zesty Riesling. The ginger complements this wine’s slightly off-dry nature, and the lime butter gets a double-shot of oomph from the lime-citrus notes inherent in the wine — and the great acidity that cuts through the fat.

2009 Oreana “Sugar Mountain Vineyard” Zinfandel – Paso Robles, CA - $17

The amazing mountain terrain in the Central Coast’s Paso Robles appellation is great ground for some stunning, sultry Zinfandel. Oreana’s small-case production (a little over 500 were made of the 2009) is rife with red plums, cherries, and a zippy bit of pomegranate. Ripe, but balanced and fresh, we really dig this with cherry-glazed, slow-cooked pork shoulder.

2009 CS Cellars Vindetta Red - Napa, CA – $20

The blend is of 70% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, 10% Syrah, an 8% Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerhouse of rich, ripe fruit–think black cherries and blackberries, with a bit of meaty smokiness and espresso notes on the finish, too. If you’re a fan of short ribs, this is a great date for it, or a kosher-salt rubbed rib-eye on the grill (now that the weather is permitting, thank goodness!).

Special Effects from the FLX

Friday, Mar 9th, 6-9pm

One of our Gnarly staffers recently did a little recon trek up to the Finger Lakes, and boy, did she find a whole lot to love. And not just the stellar whites that the FLX is known for (like the zippy, great Gewurztraminer we’ll be pouring for you this Friday night) — but, holy lady of the lake, the reds, too! Plush, rich, ripe, pure — it’s not what you expect, right? Well expect it…

2010 Atwater Estate Gewurztraminer – Finger Lakes, NY – $19
The Movie Star! Ginger, that is. Could we have given her a wine on Gilligan’s ol’ Island to embody the sexy essence of her super-stardom, this would be it. Not only is there a beautiful burst of her namesake rhizome, thre’s a whole bunch of other textural and flavor elements going on here. Likely, because these are from some of Atwater’s older vineyards, planted in ’72 and ’82 respectively. There’s a drop of residual sugar here that adds more slippery body than sweetness, and this Gewurz gets a really cool bit of grip to its silky texture from a sleep-on-it, overnight skin-fermentation. The floral nose and intense flavors of that trademark ginger, pear, lychee, white pepper, and clove are dazzling, but unlike your typical Hollywood starlet, balanced!

2009 Fox Run Lemberger – Finger Lakes, NY – $16
Blaufrankisch! It’s what all the cool kids are drinking. But Blau’s whip-lean, sometimes stemmy self can be a little bit bossy in your mouth. Even to say! It’s a lot to get your tongue around. Which, maybe, is why we’re really digging Fox Run’s Lemberger (the other calling card for Blau). Here, the fruit is on the softer side–blackberries and plums, but with that trademark peppery, peppy personality that this grape is known for. Slow-cook up some pork shoulder and sip on this.

2008 Atwater Estate Cabernet Franc – Finger Lakes, NY – $20
Atwater’s ruby-jewel hued Cabernet Franc lines your mouth with its plushy texture and ripe flavors of red plums, cherries, and cocoa powder, and a welcome tea-leaf finish that brings this stunner to a long, lush, slightly savory finish. Atwater winemaker Vinny Aliperti is a big fan of fresh fruit in his wines, and we think this beautifully balanced Cab Franc really shows not just how lovely Cab Franc can be, but its great potential in the FLX, too. With this, treat yourself to a nice, seared filet mignon with a reduced balsamic glaze, and raise a glass to NY.

15% off featured wines during the tasting!

There’s a whole lotta wing-and-a-prayer, bootstrappin’, entrepreneurial chutzpah that’s brought NY State wine to the place it is today — from the early experimenters 40 years ago on Long Island’s North Fork to the good Dr. Konstantin Frank who was convinced that vinifera would be victorious in the Finger Lakes.

2010 Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling – Finger Lakes, NY – $17.50
Wine production in the Finger Lakes began in 1862, but it was winemaker Dr. Konstantin Frank (the charming fella above leaning on the barrel) who revitalized the region after the triple-blow of phylloxera, Prohibition, and World War II. His dry Riesling is one of the best examples of its kind in the region with its pale golden color, silky texture, and clean, stony finish. Refreshingly aromatic with scents of dried pineapple and orange blossom, this wine works with anything from rich pork dishes to shellfish to salads.

2009 Dr Konstantin Frank Rkatsiteli – Finger Lakes, NY – $19
One of the oldest vinifera grape varieties known to man, Rkatsiteli is an elegant dry wine that presents a bouquet of fresh flowers and herbs balanced with wonderful fruit and a steely, bracing freshness on the finish. Lime and lemon flavors make this a good pair for with feta and asparagus stuffed chicken.

NV Widow’s Walk Merlot – Long Island, NY – $9
Ever drive out to Long Island on the North Road in the spring, right around the time the tractors are tilling the potato fields, kicking up all that loamy, dry dirt? That aroma–earthy, rooted, distinct — there’s no doubt about it that it’s akin to what you pick up in many a Long Island red. That dark, dusty, warm-earth aroma is right there in this pretty Merlot, along with backyard blackberries and summer black cherries. Juicy but with a nice, lip-smacking tartness to the finish, this is a great wine to pop on a weeknight with a cheddar-topped turkey burger or your mom’s awesome recipe for meatloaf.
