Jive Turkey
First off, a big thank-you to everyone who came out to
celebrate our 1st Anniversary last weekend! As expected, it was a blast – great food, wine, music and company!
Now back to business. The holiday season is fast approaching,
so let’s start with some turkey and a little time with the kids…
Sunday, November 16: Thanksgiving Wines and JIVE TURKEY 2-5pm: A Thanksgiving Extravaganza Not to be Missed!!!
Gnarly Vines is thrilled to collaborate with our world-famous neighbor, JIVE TURKEY, for an amazing, over-the-top, pre-Thanksgiving wine and turkey tasting.
THE TURKEYS
Bite-size samplers of three of Jive Turkey’s scrumptious deep-fried Turkeys:
Peach Bourbon, Lemon Pepper and Cajun!!!
THE WINES
MONTEBRUNO – Joe Pedicini, the winemaker/owner will be on hand to pour his own wines.
Joe’s a good friend, great guy and a former WSET Diploma classmate/drinking buddy. Montebruno follows sustainable or stricter winemaking and grape-growing practices. They are certified by both Salmon Safe and LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology, Inc).
2007 Montebruno Pinot Blanc, Willamette Valley, OR – $17.50
Sourced entirely from the Deerhaven Vyd, this is fairly crisp and elegant for a Pinot Blanc. Beautifully structured with tropical and citrus flavors and some granite minerality.
2007 Montebruno Gewurztraminer, Willamette Valley, OR – $17.50
A rare, bone-dry Gewurztraminer sourced from 30-yr old vines from Mary’s Peak Vyd. The lack of sweetness tones down the lychee/orange peel flavors revealing gorgeous rose petal and cardamom notes.
2006 Montebruno Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, OR – $45
Whole berries are de-stemmed and fermented with wild, indigenous yeasts in small, open tanks – a traditional method that brings out old-world terroir from Oregon. A wonderful example of a low tech/manual labor-intensive wine.
Eat a Turkey, Save a Stork!
Our friends, the Mallos, are part of a group of Alsace winemakers who helped create a sanctuary to protect and reintroduce the endangered white stork (la Cigogne), the official symbol of Alsace. They also make a mean gewurz and pinot blanc in their small, independent, family-owned winery that adheres to strict, sustainable winemaking practices.
2005 Mallo Gewurztaminer ‘Cuvee St-Jacques’, Alsace, France – $21
Harvested late in the season to make lush, aromatic wine with just a touch of sweetness. This wine is full-bodied, with sumptuous lychee/orange peel flavors and clove/ginger spice notes. A legendary turkey pairing that will add flavor, style and joy to your holiday.
2006 Mallo Pinot Blanc ‘Special Delivery’, Alsace, France – $15
Another reference to their much adored stork, the ‘Special Delivery’ has a touch of residual sugar that adds body and a bit of sweetness to the wine. Very ripe and fragrant up front, it dissolves beautifully into a long, off-dry finish.
Some more American gems to try with turkey:
2006 Carabella Vineyard Pinot Gris, Chehalem Mountains, OR – $22
Carabella is located high on the protected SE flank of the Chehalem Mountains. Two-thirds stainless steel and one-third barrel fermented for a light oaky, vanilla/brioche influence. Pear and citrus flavors, floral notes, creamy middle and crisp finish.
2006 Lieb Cellars Reserve Pinot Blanc, Long Island – $20 per btl/ $44 Magnum
From some of the oldest vines on the North Fork. Aromatic white peach with layers of soft fruit, chalk and honey. The magnum is about 12 glasses of wine – perfect for large groups!
2005 Nicholson Ranch Estate Pinot Noir, Sonoma Valley, CA – $36
Small production, elegant somewhat earthy style of pinot, but definitely Californian in terms of ripeness and flavor!
2006 Six Sigma Estate, Cuvee Pique-Nique, Bordeaux Blend, Lake County, CA – $24
A California blend of four Bordeaux varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Ripe, balanced wine with firm structure and round, lush fruit, minerality and a cedary taste, like woodsy berries, a Bordeaux-style beauty that’s definitely a lot more than a simple picnic wine!
